The not so sweet owner of Tastries Bakery in Bakersfield, California is facing intense backlash on social media after refusing to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Owner Cathy Miller claims that she referred the couple to another bakery because of her religious beliefs.
Eileen Del Rio (no relation to Bianca) wrote in a Facebook post that she and her fiancé went to Tastries Bakery for a wedding cake tasting but were soon told to go somewhere else once Cathy realized that her fiancé was a woman. Del Rio wrote "She don't (sic) condone same sex marriages so refused to make our wedding cake." The post spread quickly over social media and people are now calling for a boycott of Tastries Bakery.
Cathy told a reporter that she doesn't celebrate same-sex marriage because she is a Christian. "The ceremony, when you're getting married is in the eyes of the Lord, okay, and that's a celebration of a union that God has brought together and that's a whole lot different than coming in and wanting a cookie."
So just to recap, Cathy "the sugar pusher" is cool with selling gay people a cookie or any other diabetes inducing treat, just not a gay wedding cake because doing so would make her a participant in an unholy act of Satan. I wish Cathy would stop using Jesus as her reason for not liking gay people. Use the same reasons others use: we have disposable income, fashion sense and do things you only Google with the curtains drawn tight and the doors locked.
The idea of two members of the same sex being sexual together makes poor Cathy feel uncomfortable, but imagining Cathy and her spouse having sexy time makes ME uncomfortable. However, in the same way Cathy and her poor, hopefully lobotomized husband aren't "making the donuts" at their pastry counter, lesbian couples aren't bumping buttons while ordering confections. Making a wedding cake is like being the fifth usher or the ninth bridesmaid: this day isn't about you and no one will remember your involvement. My guess is that Jesus will give you a pass for the gay stuff but not the carbs. Have you seen his abs up there on the cross? More like cross fit!
But on a positive note, Cathy the Carb Counter and her business partner (God) inspired me to make this shirt
