Police in Washington state are asking residents to refrain from calling 911 just to report problems accessing Facebook. Facebook and Instagram experienced widespread outages Wednesday, leading some panicked users in Bothell, Washington, to report their social networking emergencies to 911. “We will move mountains to help those in our community,” Bothell Police tweeted. “However we can’t fix Facebook so please don’t call 911 to ‘let us know [it’s] down.’“ Facebook said “a networking issue” was to blame for the connection problems. This is what I imagine most of the phone calls to 911 sounded like:
Dispatcher: “911 what is your emergency?”
Caller: “Yes, my Facebook is down and I can’t remember what dumb thing I posted 5 years ago with out it remind me.”
I'll be honest, Facebook is probably my least favorite social media network to use. My newsfeed always looks like the vision board of a deranged narcissist who dabbles in activism. Every post is about how amazing someone's life is. Newsflash, if your life was really that great then you wouldn't feel the need to post about it every hour. Facebook is just too full of people pretending to be happy. That's why I prefer twitter, where people pretend to be miserable.
