As Hurricane Harvey hit Texas last Friday night, President Trump issued an official pardon for Joe Arpaio, the former Arizona sheriff who was convicted in July of criminal contempt for defying an order to stop imprisoning suspected illegal immigrants. “After more than 50 years of admirable service to our nation,” the White House said in a statement Friday, “he is [a] worthy candidate for a presidential pardon.” The 85-year-old former sheriff has long been an outspoken critic of undocumented immigrants and appeared with Trump on the campaign trail in 2016.
Trump and Arpaio have a lot in common, one of those things being their disdain for the judiciary. Both men claim that Arpaio was treated unfairly by Judge C. Murray Snow, the judge who ordered Arpaio to stop racial profiling (aka breaking the law), because of political bias. Judge Snow has not commented on the pardon, but a man who clerked for the judge during the trial has spoken out on Twitter.
The clerk makes it clear that there was absolutely no political bias in Judge Snow's decision and that the judge is in fact a conservative, not a liberal. You may remember that President Trump made similar accusations of bias against the judge presiding over the class action lawsuit involving Trump University, in which Trump said the judge could not be partial because he is "Mexican." So it should come as no surprise that Trump was more than happy to pardon Arpaio, they are two peas in a racist pod.
