A woman in Italy married herself in a small ceremony complete with bridesmaids and a wedding cake. Laura Mesi, a 40-year-old fitness instructor and vlogger from a small town near Milan, is believed to be the first woman in the country to marry herself. Mesi said she first considered the idea of a solo wedding after the end of a 12-year relationship two years ago. “I told my relatives and friends that if I had not found my soul mate I would marry myself by my 40th birthday,” she said. A total of 70 guests attended the ceremony, which holds no legal weight, to join Mesi in celebrating self-love and acceptance as part of a trend known as “sologamy.” Mesa said she remains open to the idea of getting married in the future, but doesn’t require the social affirmation typically associated with a traditional marriage. Believe it or not, I'm a big fan of marriage. I mean you get tax breaks, legal benefits, and if you are gay like me, you get to piss off a Christian baker. Also, you get to live the rest of your life with your best friend. That's awesome! But you know what I'm not a fan of? Wedding ceremonies. I'm absolutely dreading the day I get married. Everyone stares at you. People expect you to act like it's the best day of your life. Did I mention I hate dancing? Literally, the only thing I actually enjoy about weddings is the cake. But if I'm one of the brides, then I'll be stuck having to go around to each table and thank every person (and his/her +1) for coming to a party that I'm paying an insane amount of money for instead of enjoying the thousand dollar wedding cake that I forced a Christian bake to make.
So, now that you know how I feel about weddings, let me just say that I think this woman who married herself is both a total attention whore and a genius because marrying yourself means you can have as much cake as you want.
